Description of Santa Veronica Kitesurf (Colombia)

If you're the kind of kiter who hears "35 knots" and grins like a kid on Christmas morning, then Santa Veronica kitesurf is going to be your kind of heaven. From December through April, this sleepy little spot on Colombia’s Caribbean coast gets lit up by rock-solid trade winds — we’re talking 20 to 35 knots on the regular, and if the wind gods are really in the mood, you might see gusts hitting 40+. Yeah, it’s that kind of party.

The crown jewel for wave riders is Salinas del Rey — it’s got these super clean, rolling waves, usually around 1.5 to 2.5 meters. It’s not scary-big, but enough to get your heart pumping and work on your bottom turns. If you're into freestyle or just like smoother water, the inside of the sand point is more protected and flatter, great for throwing tricks or just freeriding without getting bounced around. Total beginner? No worries — there are friendly flat water spots nearby where you can practice without getting chewed by waves.

The beach itself is sandy and pretty accessible — you can roll up in your car and be rigged and riding in minutes. It’s not the widest beach you’ll ever see, and when the swell kicks in, the shore break can get a bit punchy, but nothing too sketchy. Bonus: even during peak season, it never feels crowded. Seriously, sometimes it felt like I had the whole coast to myself.

What to do besides kitesurfing

Santa Veronica isn’t your Cancun-style scene. It’s low-key, unpolished, and all the better for it. You won’t find beach clubs or DJs here (unless one of the local kiters brings a speaker). Instead, there’s fresh grilled fish, ice-cold beers, and the occasional hammock nap under a palm tree. The local kite crowd is a cool mix of Colombians, Europeans, and random globe-trotting wind junkies. Everyone's stoked, everyone shares the stoke.

If, and that’s a big if, you manage to tear yourself away from the water, there are some funky local spots worth checking out. The pink salt lagoon at Salinas de Galerazamba is pretty surreal (and very Instagrammable, if you’re into that), and the El Totumo mud volcano is... well, weird, squishy, and oddly relaxing and, if you still want to explore, visit Cartagena or Park Tayrona, also it's possible to ride in other spots.
