Go kiting to Sri Lanka: Why choose this country?

Sri Lanka is already famous among wave surfers, but it has also become an increasingly popular destination for kitesurfers. Located just south of India, this tropical island combines warm waters, exotic landscapes and a wide variety of coastal environments. Kitesurfing is particularly attractive because the seasonal winds can be very consistent, while the relatively undeveloped coastline leaves plenty of opportunities for riders who enjoy exploring beyond the established spots.

The main kitesurfing areas are Kalpitiya on the northwest coast and Arugam Bay in the southeast. Kalpitiya is the country’s main kite hub, with reliable seasonal winds, shallow lagoons and access to a long, remote coastline. Arugam Bay is better known for its world-class surf, but the surrounding area also offers opportunities for kitesurfing. The northwest coast is particularly interesting for adventurous riders, with remote beaches and islands stretching towards Adam’s Bridge. The main kite season is generally June to September, with an additional wind season around December and January in the Kalpitiya area.

When you are not kitesurfing, Sri Lanka offers an incredible variety of experiences for such a compact island. Ancient cities and temples, lush forests, tea plantations, national parks, wildlife reserves and spectacular mountain landscapes are all within reach. You can spot elephants and leopards, explore historic sites, hike through tropical landscapes or simply enjoy the beaches and local cuisine. Sri Lanka is an excellent choice for combining consistent kitesurfing with a genuine tropical adventure.

Pros: The cost of living is low, therefore even in touristic areas, you can have great deals for accommodations and food. The wind seasons are reliable with a good percentage of windy days.

Cons: Tourism is very welcome because Sri Lankans perfectly know how profitable it is, but the average quality of service, apart from a few cases in Colombo, is not top-notch, so you need to be adaptable. Traveling around the island is very slow due to the poor road infrastructure.
