Description of Las Terrenas Kite Beach (Dominican Republic)

Las Terrenas Kite Beach is a top draw for kitesurfing aficionados, inviting them to indulge in the thrill of the sport in the Dominican Republic, alongside the renowned spot of Cabarete. From December through September, it offers an enticing array of conditions that cater to both seasoned riders and newcomers alike.

At the heart of Las Terrenas lies El Portillo, the main spot where side-shore wind conditions prevail. Here, a delightful fusion of trade and thermal winds creates an ideal setting for dynamic rides on the waves. Typically, the wind begins to pick up around 1 pm, reaching its zenith as the sun begins its descent, with the breeze persisting until approximately 6 pm.

With wind speeds averaging between 15 and 20 knots, riders are treated to optimal conditions for kitesurfing. Moreover, the bay, partially sheltered from prevailing wave directions and bolstered by the surrounding reef, offers extensive stretches of flat water—a haven for beginners honing their skills and enthusiasts of freestyle and wakestyle maneuvers alike. Whether you're seeking the thrill of the ride or the serenity of gliding across calm waters, Las Terrenas Kite Beach is the place to go kiting, for an unforgettable experience.

What to do besides kitesurfing

Samana Peninsula has a lot to offer in terms of lush nature. Tropical jungles with waterfalls, amazing white coral beaches, and great snorkeling spots can make a no-wind day still an amazing one. Worth to mention the seasonal whale pass between the months of January and March. Accommodations are mostly available close to Punta Poppy, while close to the El Portillo spot they are limited to a few luxury villas and condo.
