Go kiting to Australia: Why choose this country?

Australia is a bucket-list destination for kitesurfers looking for space, variety and world-class conditions without the crowds found in many European kite hubs. With thousands of kilometres of coastline, the country offers everything from powerful ocean and wave spots to flat-water lagoons, shallow bays and reliable thermal winds. Rather than focusing on one famous destination, Australia is best experienced as a collection of very different kite regions.

Western Australia is one of the country's major kitesurfing playgrounds. Around Perth and Fremantle, the famous Fremantle Doctor provides strong and reliable afternoon winds during the warmer months. Further north, the Coral Coast and Exmouth offer spectacular turquoise water, sandy beaches and access to the Ningaloo Reef. On the opposite side of the country, Queensland and the Gold Coast combine kitesurfing with a lively beach culture, while Tasmania offers colder, more exposed and remote conditions surrounded by dramatic wilderness.

Australia is particularly suited to a kitesurfing road trip. Many riders rent a car or campervan, take their equipment and follow the wind along the coast, often finding huge beaches and uncrowded water. Between sessions there is an enormous range of things to experience, from snorkelling and diving on coral reefs to hiking, surfing and discovering Australia's unique wildlife. The combination of reliable wind, spectacular landscapes and the freedom to explore makes Australia as much an adventure destination as a kitesurfing one.

Pros: Huge variety of conditions — flat water, waves, and everything in between. Extremely consistent thermal winds in WA during summer (the "Doctor" is famous for its reliability). Clean, safe, well-organized infrastructure and easy to self-drive. Uncrowded spots compared to Europe or the Caribbean. Stunning scenery and wildlife alongside the kiting.

Cons: It's a long, expensive flight for most of the world, and distances between spots within Australia are also large. Cost of living, food, and accommodation are high compared to most other kite destinations. Best wind season is tied to the Southern Hemisphere summer (November-March), which is off-season for many travelers' usual calendars. Some remote spots require serious self-sufficiency (fuel, water, no phone signal)
