Description of Embalse Puclaro (Chile)
Embalse Puclaro: Chile’s Wind Machine Located in the stunning Elqui Valley (Coquimbo Region), Embalse Puclaro is widely considered Chile’s premier kitesurfing destination. This artificial reservoir offers world-class, incredibly consistent wind conditions framed by dramatic, arid Andean mountains. Here is what makes Puclaro a must-visit spot for kitesurfers: The Wind: Reliable & Strong The Season: The prime wind season runs from October to March (the Southern Hemisphere's spring and summer). The Consistency: Thanks to a powerful thermal effect created by the heating of the valley desert, the wind here is famously reliable. It typically kicks in around 1:00 PM and blows steadily until sunset. The Force: You can regularly expect winds ranging from 20 to 35+ knots, usually blowing side-onshore. Small to medium kite sizes (from 5m to 9m) are the standard choice here. The Water & Launch Conditions The Water: Puclaro is a freshwater reservoir. The water temperature is cool but manageable—a 3/2mm or 4/3mm wetsuit is highly recommended year-round. The Surface: Expect everything from flat water near the shoreline (great for freestyle and progression) to heavy chop in the middle of the lake, perfect for catching massive air. The Launch: The main launch zones—most notably around the lakeside town of Gualliguaica—feature pebble and earth beaches. Local Vibe & Infrastructure Gualliguaica is the heart of the local kite scene. The town was entirely relocated to higher ground when the dam was built, and it has since embraced its status as a wind-sports hub. Pro Tip: If you are looking for lessons or gear rental, Gualliguaica hosts top-tier infrastructure, including the country's most reputable IKO-certified instruction, making it an excellent spot for both independent riders and those looking to safely learn the sport. Getting There Location: About 50 km (31 miles) east of the coastal city of La Serena. Access: A scenic 45-minute drive along Route 41 (Camino Internacional) takes you straight into the Elqui Valley. Whether you want to boost huge jumps against a backdrop of sun-drenched mountains or progress your skills in one of the most reliable wind tunnels in South America, Embalse Puclaro delivers an unforgettable session.
