Description of Saint Aygulf (France)
Saint Aygulf is a mellow summer thermal spot on the southern French coast between Fréjus and Sainte-Maxime. From June to September, it delivers consistent 12–15 knot thermal winds, especially on sunny, high-pressure days. The wide, sandy beach offers easy rigging, though weekends get crowded with sunbathers. Launching is simple, but expect a short walk from the parking.
The rideable zone is marked with buoys—stay within 300m of shore to avoid fines. The water gets choppy in thermal sessions, making it great for freeride and practicing transitions. You’ll mostly use 12–15m kites, depending on your weight. The water is clear, and heading upwind toward Les Issambres gives stunning views.
Off-season, easterly storm winds can bring gusty, wavey conditions—better for experienced riders. In summer, boardshorts or a rash guard are enough; bring a shorty for cooler days. The beach stays shallow and sandy far out, making it beginner-friendly despite some chop.
The vibe is laid-back with a few kite schools, light crowds, and helpful locals. Cafés and stores are nearby. If you’re after easy, uncrowded sessions and chill freeriding with a lightwind setup, Saint Aygulf is a solid summer pick. Just wait until after lunch—the wind builds later in the day.

Maybe not be worth a real journey to reach this spot, but great if you live close by and it is a windy day. In the end, being out on the water feels great anywhere
Equipment
In summer, most ride 12–15m kites for thermal south/southwest winds; lighter riders might use a 10m. A twin tip or directional board works well. It’s usually warm—ride in a shorty or none at all, though a 3/2mm spring suit is a safe bet. In spring or fall, pack a 4/3mm. Booties aren’t needed on the clean sand, but some use them for grip. A wind meter is handy—thermals can build fast.

Dangers
At Saint Aygulf, stay within the buoyed kite zone—it's enforced, especially in summer. Launch only at marked spots and keep within 300 meters to avoid fines. The beach is soft but busy in peak months, so ride early or late.
Thermal winds build fast—watch for whitecaps near Les Issambres. In spring and fall, gusty easterlies can bring squalls, so ride only if experienced.
Check forecasts, respect local etiquette, and let someone know if you're riding solo—lifeguards aren’t always around.
