Description of Mecufi (Mozambique)

Mecufi Beach stands out as the best wave kitesurfing spot in the northern part of Mozambique, combining turquoise crystal clear water with a long and wide shoreline that gives riders generous space to set up and get into the water without feeling crowded or constrained. The beach sits 10 kilometers north of the Baia do Lurio, in the proximity of Diamond Resort, and the combination of its location and the quality of its waves makes it a destination that wave riding enthusiasts in this part of Africa should have on their radar.

On the best days, waves can build up to 2 meters in height and peel along the beach for extended distances, providing the kind of long and satisfying rides that wave kiters travel specifically to find. The consistency of the spot across different wind periods means that even when conditions are not at their most powerful, Mecufi still delivers a worthwhile session rather than leaving riders waiting on the beach for the right moment. That reliability across varying conditions is one of the characteristics that defines a genuinely good wave spot as opposed to one that only performs on a narrow range of perfect days.

How to get There

The closest airport is in Pemba. From there you need to drive south on the only coast dirt road for about 25-30 km, passing Murrebue village, before reaching Mecufi municipality.

Access

The easiest access is through the Mecufi Diamond resort. A daily fee can be applied, but will include pool access and the resort offers restaurant and bar service.

What to do besides kitesurfing

Mecufi is a genuinely remote destination, and that isolation is something every visiting rider needs to factor into the planning process before arriving. The area around the beach has limited accommodation options beyond Diamond Resort, which makes it the natural base for most visitors staying in the immediate vicinity of the spot. For those looking for alternative lodging at a lower price point or a different character, the closest options are found 20 kilometers north at Murrebue Beach, where several small lodges provide a practical alternative without requiring too much of a compromise on proximity to the kiting.
