Go kiting to Mozambique: Why choose this country?

Mozambique is an extraordinary destination for kitesurfers looking for tropical beaches, warm Indian Ocean waters and a more adventurous, off-the-beaten-path experience. With around 2,500 km of coastline, the country offers vast sandy beaches, coral reefs, lagoons and remote coastal landscapes. Kitesurfing is still far less developed than in many established destinations, which means riders can discover spectacular stretches of coastline with very little infrastructure or crowding.

The country's best-known kite areas include Vilanculos, Tofo and Ponta do Ouro, each offering a different experience. Vilanculos and the surrounding Bazaruto Archipelago are particularly attractive for their warm shallow waters, sandbanks and consistent seasonal winds, while the southern coast around Ponta do Ouro combines kitesurfing with more exposed Indian Ocean conditions. The tropical setting, coral reefs and abundant marine life make Mozambique especially appealing for riders who want to combine kiting with snorkelling, diving, sailing and exploring remote beaches.

Mozambique is equally compelling away from the water. Mangrove forests, coastal wilderness, coral reefs and protected marine areas support an impressive range of wildlife, including dolphins, whales, turtles and dugongs. The Bazaruto islands provide a spectacular island escape, while Maputo offers a completely different experience, with Portuguese-influenced architecture, lively markets, music and a distinctive African culture. With its combination of wild coastline, tropical nature and relatively undeveloped kite scene, Mozambique is particularly suited to travellers looking for adventure, warm-water kitesurfing and genuine exploration rather than a conventional resort holiday.

Pros: Mozambique, affordable and less commercial than other African countries in the Indian Ocean, retains exoticism and purity that’s still accessible to all. Amazingly uncrowded spots are scattered along its coastline for the most adventurous kiters.

Cons: The brutal 16-year civil war ended in the 1990s, claimed a million lives here, crippling the economy and destroying much architecture. Therefore services are not always reliable and adjustment to circumstances is often needed. Malaria is still broadly present so prophylaxis is recommended.

Travel Tips

Mozambique is fairly undeveloped with bad road connections. Therefore if you plan a trip by car, you need a 4x4. When you need to cover large distances, it is recommendable to use internal flights. For that, Mozambique is served almost exclusively by the national air company: LAM - Mozambican Airlines, which also connects to the neighboring countries almost as the monopolist. So program your international flight connections carefully.
