Before you book
Kitesurfing needs proper teaching from the first minute. Choose a school whose instructors are certified by a recognized organization such as IKO or VDWS, and ask how they are insured.
Rescue boat or water assistance, helmets and impact vests, radio helmets or a coach that talks to you, and a small group size: these decide how safe your first days are.
Flat, shallow, wide water with steady wind is the easiest to learn on. Read the guide of the spot of each school and check the best season before you plan your trip.
Compare lesson formats (private or group), the hours you really get on the water, the gear included, the cancellation and bad-weather rules, and the language the lessons are given in.

Questions
It depends on wind, fitness and the quality of the lessons, but most beginners need roughly 6 to 12 hours of instruction to control a kite, get up on the board and ride, and more time to ride upwind independently. A multi-day course, with the same instructor, works best.
Yes. You will be in the water a lot, and a kite can drag you. You should be comfortable and confident swimming in open water, and schools will usually give you a buoyancy aid or impact vest and a helmet.
Private lessons are faster, because all the time is yours. Group lessons cost less and are fun, but you spend part of the time waiting for your turn. Many people start with a private first lesson and then continue in a small group.
Sun protection, a swimsuit or shorty, water shoes if the beach is rocky, and a towel. The school normally provides the kite, board, harness, helmet and often the wetsuit: ask when you book.
