Kitesurfing in Lomala-Kaugatoma: Conditions, Wind & Season
With a west wind, this kitesurfing spot in Saaremaa is considered one of the island's standout locations. The beach leads into a large, shallow area that is separated from the open sea, creating a unique lagoon-like environment. The entrance can be a little challenging, but once you are inside the riding area, it feels much more like a lake than the sea, with almost completely flat water.
The large shallow lagoon provides excellent conditions for freeride, freestyle and riders looking to improve their technique. The lack of significant waves makes the water predictable and easy to read, allowing you to concentrate on edging, board control, jumps and other skills. With a good west wind, the combination of steady wind and flat water can create particularly enjoyable sessions.
The spot is surrounded by the quiet natural landscape of Saaremaa, giving it a peaceful and uncrowded atmosphere. The main challenge is getting through the rocky and slippery entrance, but once on the water, the character of the spot changes completely. Inside the lagoon, the spacious riding area and lake-like conditions make it a great place to spend a full session.

Kitesurfing Safety & Local Rules at Lomala-Kaugatoma
The main difficulty at this spot is the narrow, rocky and pebbly beach, which can make entering and exiting the water tricky. The shoreline can be slippery, particularly where the bottom becomes muddy, so assistance when entering the water is recommended. Take care when carrying the kite and board over the rocks and avoid rushing during launch or landing.
The lagoon itself is shallow and generally offers very flat water, but the bottom consists mainly of mud with occasional shells. Wearing suitable footwear is advisable to protect your feet and improve grip on the slippery entrance. Be especially careful when walking through the shallow water, as the combination of mud, rocks and shells can make footing unstable.
