Kitesurfing in Pont des Basses: Conditions, Wind & Season

Pont des Basses, just south of Canet-en-Roussillon near Perpignan, is a relaxed Mediterranean kitesurfing spot with a long, wide sandy beach and plenty of space for launching and landing. The open Mediterranean provides typical freeride conditions, with relatively small chop on lighter days and more pronounced waves when the wind increases. Behind the beach, the surrounding lagoons and wetlands create a scenic backdrop and are home to numerous bird species, including flamingos.

The spot works particularly well with the Mediterranean sea breeze, which develops during warm and sunny conditions and can provide enjoyable afternoon sessions. Southerly and southeasterly winds can also produce good riding, while the strong northwesterly Tramontane requires considerably more caution because it blows offshore or cross-offshore along this section of coast. When the Tramontane is strong, conditions are better suited to experienced riders, and going out without suitable rescue support is not recommended.

Water conditions are generally choppy rather than completely flat, making Pont des Basses particularly enjoyable for freeride, cruising and practising transitions. The sandy beach provides an easy setup area, although conditions become more challenging as stronger winds generate larger chop and shorebreak. During July and August the coastline becomes considerably busier with swimmers and holidaymakers, and kitesurfers must respect the designated launch corridors and buoy-marked navigation zones. Outside the main summer season, the beach is much quieter and offers considerably more room.

Spring through early autumn provides the most comfortable kitesurfing season, with warm temperatures and frequent opportunities for thermal winds. Summer afternoons can deliver pleasant moderate breezes, while stronger weather systems outside midsummer can produce more powerful sessions. Intermediate riders will generally feel comfortable in normal sea-breeze conditions, while beginners should consider taking lessons or riding with local supervision, particularly because wind strength and direction can change during the day.

Pont des Basses has a noticeably quieter atmosphere than some of the major kitesurfing destinations farther north around Leucate. Facilities directly at the launch are limited, so it is a good idea to arrive with your equipment, drinking water, food and sun protection already organised. Canet-en-Roussillon is only a short distance away and provides restaurants, shops and accommodation, while the surrounding Catalan coastline offers plenty to explore when there is no wind. With its spacious beach, Mediterranean setting and laid-back atmosphere, Pont des Basses is an appealing alternative for riders looking to escape the busier kite spots of southern France.

Kitesurfing Safety & Local Rules at Pont des Basses

The main hazard at Pont des Basses is the strong northwesterly Tramontane. Along this section of coastline it can blow offshore or cross-offshore, making it difficult or impossible to return to the beach if equipment fails or the wind changes. The Tramontane can also strengthen rapidly and become gusty, so choose your kite size carefully and avoid riding in offshore conditions without appropriate experience and reliable rescue support.

During July and August, the beach and surrounding water become considerably busier with swimmers and holidaymakers. Kitesurfing must be practised within the designated areas and riders should respect the buoy-marked navigation and launch corridors. Give swimmers and other beach users plenty of space, particularly when launching and landing, and check the current local regulations before entering the water.

The seabed is predominantly sandy and there are no major underwater hazards under normal conditions. However, seaweed, driftwood and other debris can occasionally accumulate close to shore, particularly following strong winds or rougher weather. Check the immediate launch and shallow-water area before starting your session, especially after a period of strong Tramontane or Mediterranean swell.

No-Wind Days: What to Do Around Pont des Basses

When the wind disappears at Pont des Basses, there is plenty to explore without travelling far. Immediately behind the coastline lies the Étang de Canet-Saint-Nazaire, a large protected coastal lagoon separated from the Mediterranean by a narrow strip of land. The wetlands are particularly interesting for birdwatching, with flamingos, herons and many migratory species using the lagoon throughout the year. Early morning and sunset are especially beautiful, when the light changes across the shallow water and the Pyrenees form a dramatic backdrop in the distance.

One of the most interesting places around the lagoon is the traditional fishermen's village near Canet-en-Roussillon. Small huts made from reeds stand beside the water and preserve the memory of the fishing communities that once worked extensively around the lagoon. From here you can walk along the surrounding paths, observe the birdlife and get a much better sense of the natural landscape behind the busy Mediterranean beaches.

Cycling is another excellent option on a windless day. The flat coastal terrain makes the area easy to explore by bike, with routes connecting Canet-en-Roussillon, the lagoon and neighbouring coastal villages. The Argelès-sur-Mer to Leucate section of La Méditerranée à Vélo passes directly through Canet-en-Roussillon and continues along the Voie Verte de l’Agly towards Le Barcarès. The route is mostly flat and combines seafront cycling, dedicated cycle paths and views across the coastal lagoons, making it a great way to explore the area when there is no wind.

For families or for a cloudy day, Oniria in Canet-en-Roussillon is one of the best nearby attractions. This modern aquarium takes visitors through different aquatic ecosystems following the journey of water from the mountains to rivers, beaches, oceans and tropical environments. Thousands of animals representing hundreds of species are displayed across its different habitats, and interactive exhibits make it particularly good for children. It is open throughout the year, making it a useful backup when neither wind nor beach weather cooperates.

Canet-en-Roussillon itself is ideal for a slower afternoon. Walk or cycle along the long seafront promenade, explore the marina or settle into one of the cafés and seafood restaurants overlooking the Mediterranean. On warm calm days you can swap the kite for swimming or stand-up paddleboarding, while the enormous sandy beach gives families plenty of space to relax. The marina is also a pleasant place for an evening stroll before dinner.

If you want something more cultural, head inland to Perpignan. Its historic centre reflects the area's strong Catalan identity, with narrow streets, colourful façades, markets and lively squares. The city's most recognizable monument is Le Castillet, the distinctive red-brick gateway that once formed part of Perpignan's medieval fortifications. Originally built in the 14th century and later used as a prison, it has become one of the symbols of the city. From there it is easy to continue exploring Perpignan's historic centre on foot and spend the afternoon discovering its Catalan architecture, cafés, shops and local food.

Between the protected lagoon, flamingos, cycling, Canet's beaches and marina, the aquarium and an easy excursion to Perpignan, Pont des Basses works well for families and non-kiters too. A calm day can easily become a mix of birdwatching and cycling in the morning, an afternoon beside the Mediterranean and seafood or Catalan cuisine in the evening rather than simply waiting on the beach for the wind to return.
