Go kiting to Dominican Republic: Why choose this country?

The Dominican Republic is one of the Caribbean's most diverse kitesurfing destinations, combining reliable trade winds, warm tropical water and a wide variety of riding conditions. The north coast is the heart of the country's kite scene, with Cabarete offering the largest concentration of schools, rental centres and different riding spots, from flatter water to reef waves. Further west, areas such as Buen Hombre provide spacious, shallow and flatter conditions with a much quieter atmosphere, making them particularly attractive for riders looking to escape the more developed resorts.

On the Samaná Peninsula, Las Terrenas offers a different experience, combining kitesurfing with spectacular tropical scenery and a more relaxed holiday atmosphere. El Portillo, east of Las Terrenas, has a reef-protected lagoon with warm, shallow water and flatter conditions inside the reef, while the outer area offers small waves. Other destinations such as Punta Cana and Las Salinas provide additional opportunities, although conditions and wind reliability vary considerably between regions and seasons.

Beyond kitesurfing, the Dominican Republic is ideal for combining riding with beaches, waterfalls, tropical forests, diving, surfing, hiking and local culture. Cabarete has the strongest international kite community and nightlife, while Las Terrenas offers beaches, restaurants and a more laid-back atmosphere. More remote destinations such as Buen Hombre provide a much more authentic and uncrowded experience. This variety makes the Dominican Republic particularly interesting for a kite road trip, allowing riders to combine several very different spots rather than staying in one resort.

Pros: Strong, consistent trade winds especially from May to August. Warm water year-round. Well-established kite infrastructure — schools, rentals, repair shops, and instructors are easy to find. Good mix of flat-water and wave/downwind options in a small area. Vibrant nightlife and restaurant scene right at the beach.

Cons: Wind is more consistent in summer months; shoulder seasons can be hit or miss. Some areas outside the tourist zones show noticeable poverty, which can be a stark contrast to resort areas. Traffic and road conditions outside towns can be rough.
