Go kiting to Costa Rica: Why choose this country?
Costa Rica is an excellent destination for kitesurfers who want reliable wind combined with tropical landscapes, adventure and the famous “Pura Vida” lifestyle. The country's dry season, roughly from December to April, brings the most consistent conditions, particularly around the northern part of the country. The combination of mountains, jungle, volcanoes and coastline makes Costa Rica feel very different from a traditional kite-resort destination.
Lake Arenal is the country's headline kitesurfing spot and one of its most distinctive. Surrounded by mountains and dominated by the impressive Arenal Volcano, the lake is known for strong, consistent winds created and accelerated by the local geography. The freshwater and generally flat conditions make it particularly attractive for freeride and freestyle, while the spectacular scenery makes every session memorable. Further north, Bahía Salinas provides an ocean alternative, with strong seasonal winds and relatively protected water inside the bay.
Away from the kite spots, Costa Rica offers an exceptional range of activities. You can combine kitesurfing with surfing, rainforest and volcano excursions, wildlife watching, hiking, ziplining, rafting and diving, often within the same trip. This variety is a major part of the attraction: a morning session can be followed by a jungle adventure, a visit to a hot spring or an evening on a Pacific beach. For travellers who want their kitesurfing holiday to include nature and adventure rather than simply staying at the beach, Costa Rica offers a particularly diverse experience.
Pros: Extremely consistent, strong winds at Lake Arenal (often 20-30+ knots) during peak season. Beautiful, varied scenery — volcanoes, cloud forest, and coastline. Easy to combine kiting with other adventure activities (zip-lining, surfing, wildlife tours). Good infrastructure and English widely spoken in tourist areas.
Cons: Wind is strongly seasonal, best from December to April; outside that window conditions drop off significantly. Lake Arenal is inland and lacks the classic "ocean lagoon" postcard look. Accommodation and food can be pricier than other Central/South American destinations. Roads can be rough, so getting between spots takes longer than the distance suggests.

Travel Tips
If you want a lively base with restaurants, nightlife, and easy rental logistics, staying near Lake Arenal town (La Fortuna) or Nuevo Arenal gives good access to the water plus volcano hikes and hot springs nearby. Rental cars are the most practical way to get around, since public transport is limited and taxis outside town centers are less reliable. Bahía Salinas, near the Nicaraguan border, is quieter and more spot-focused, with fewer extra activities and a smaller selection of restaurants and lodging. Bringing your own gear is a good idea, since rental fleets are smaller than in more established kite destinations and can sell out in peak season.
